Hygiene Mela is a kind of demonstration sharing different better application of Hygiene methodologies in shape of entertainment. It’s a form of education for local community in improving their knowledge regarding hygiene. It’s a type of connectivity among NGOs government departments and community for making better working relationships.
This type of event brings changes in behavior and is cost effective way of promoting health and preventing diseases. It provides an enhanced learning environment for the community.
1. To create awareness regarding hygiene among the local population living in tehsil Athmaqam.
2. To provide hygiene education to a large group of people in one time.
3. To provide a common platform to NGOs, Government departments and other stakeholders.
PRE MELA ACTIVITIES:
Salik Foundation was the key host of this Mela. The methodology adopted to organize this Mela was participatory.
Planning for this Mela started from October 16, 2008. Salik Foundation invited NGOs/INGOs and members of other organizations and institutions for a planning meeting.
In Planning meeting it was decided that the Hygiene Mela would continue to be a one-day event from 10 am to 4 pm. It was also decided to invite Mr. Attaullah Atta (DC Neelum) as chief guest.
8 organizations came forward voluntarily and 4 sub committees were formed. Each committee had 5-6 members and was responsible for a particular component of Mela.
The collective efforts and ownership culminated in a successful one-day event.
One among the 4 sub committees had the responsibility of pre event publicity. Posters (A4 size) were distributed and pasted on walls widely. The Mela was also publicized by loudspeaker and through newspaper. A press release regarding Hygiene Mela was published in Local newspaper a few days before. Invitations were sent to various community centers, health centers, Govt departments and the local press.
The Mela was inaugurated by Mr. Attaullah Atta (DC Neelum) by cutting a ribbon. The inauguration then followed by program consisted of different events.
The program started with recitation of Holy Quran. Mr. Shakir recited a few verses from the Holy Quran.

Debates on Hygiene
Local Music (Qawali)
Different school children participated in debates on hygiene jokes and sang national songs. A quiz competition was also included in the Mela. In this competition simple questions regarding hygiene were asked from children and women and prizes were given to the winners.
Salik Foundation theater volunteers performed on a script in Hygiene mela. The script emphasized on:
A: Washing hands with soap and air drying
Before preparing food.
Before eating food.
B: Methods of cleaning water
Boiling for 5 minutes
Keeping transparent bottles of water in Light for 8 hours
In this Mela 9 organization participated and had their exhibitions stalls. These were:

• Alsaba Development Organization (ADO)
• Pakistan Community Development program (PAK CDP).
• Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
• Sukhi Development Foundation (IR).
• Friends Foundation.
• Khushi Foundation
Most of the stalls displayed by NGOs were information based and displayed variety of information to the participants.
A total of 1280 male and 240 female attended this Mela. The Participants were from all age groups.

Healthy, Encouraging, Promoting, Educating and participatory event which mobilize community to follow some principles to reduce diarrhea among children.
This raised core health issues and taught preventive measures in shape of different events. Excellent job done by well-equipped team of Salik Foundation for organizing all stuff.

The volunteers provided very good support. The volunteers helped much in keeping record of the number of attendees and the collection of evaluation forms. Visitors returned a total of 50 evaluation forms.

Print media covered the mela story extensively. Key people were interviewed before and during the mela. A press kit was also provided to the news reporters before the mela. The newspapers that covered the event were Daily Khabrain, Daily siasat, Azkar and Muhasib.
The Hygiene mela was seen a successful event, while changing their attitudes and behaviors and was cost effective way of promoting hygiene and preventing diseases. Its aim was to provide learning environment for the community. For this purpose different activity in the mela ware organized very well. Exhibition stands of Salik Foundation and other NGOs in the mela were very informative.
As compare to the last mela held in Mirpura in October 2008 there was all round improvement in this mela. The level of participation has gone up significantly. The focus on outcome made the mela more impact and result oriented.
