Interactive theater Report in Athmaqam (AJK)

Background:

Salik Foundation is working on Hygiene promotion in district Neelum. The objective is to reduce the incident of diarrhea among the children less than 5 years of age. For this purpose different activities are performed such as Hygiene sessions with mother and Father of children, meeting with doctors, Hygiene trainings to religious leaders, hygiene melas and interactive theater.

In this connection Salik Foundation organized a theater program. Theater conveyed hygiene messages to participants.

This program was arranged in GBMS Danjar, situated in north of Town Athmaqam. Mothers and Fathers of children were informed few days before about this program and they participated in large numbers. The participants watched theater keenly and got knowledge about hygiene.

Mr. Hasan Din (X-Chairman UC Shahkot) was the chief guest of this program.

Objective:

 To create awareness and behavior change among the participants to lead towards reduction in diarrhea among children.

Proceeding of the program:

The program started with recitation of Holy Quran. Abda pervin recited a few verses from the Holy Quran. Then Phool Jelani, iffat and Asma came for Naat. After it the facilitator gave a brief introduction of the project as will as the organization and shared the objective of this program. Then he invited the theater group to perform on stage.

The script was very informative that emphasized:
1) A: To wash hands for 20 seconds with soap at key times i.e

 Before preparing food.
 Before eating food.
 After Defecation.
B: After washing hands with soap not to dry hands with towel but to dry with air.

2) Methods of cleaning water with germs i.e.
 Boiling water for 5 minutes.
 To keep water bottle in sunlight for eight hours.
Theater group performed very nicely and conveyed all these messages to participants.

Conversation:

After the performance of theater group the facilitator asked different questions from participants such as:

Which diseases are most common in this area? What are the main causes of these diseases? How can we prevent ourselves from different diseases? Why it is necessary to wash hands with soap? When to wash hands with soap? Why we should dry our hands in air and not with towel? What role a father and mother can play to reduce diarrhea disease among children? And How to clean and protect water sources etc.

The participants also asked different questions, which were answered by facilitator.

First of all he thanked to Salik Foundation for arranging such program. He also appreciated the performance of theater group. He said that hygienic condition in our area is very bad. Water born diseases are very common in our area. He said that such programs would bring a positive change in people behavior.

Community Response:

They said that it is a good initiative to create awareness and bring changes in people behavior. Along with learning It had also provided entertainment too. The people promised that we will act upon these messages and will also spread in community to others.

Conclusion:

This theater program met its objective. Observation and written evaluation of the program demonstrated that the program increases awareness and empathy, promoted positive new behaviors and provided significant knowledge to mothers and fathers of children.
