Life will Smile Again
Interview conducted on 21st March 2015. Case study is accompanied by photos and interviews.
Initial interview & research was carried out by Mr. Mubashir Younis (PC) SDF on 22nd October 2014. Zahid Rehman S/o Akbar Zaman is residing in Pakistan as Afghan Refugee since his birth. Noor Muhammad and his family is living below poverty line compromising of 12 family members with 03 sisters and two brothers living in 03 rooms small mud house at Barari Afghan Village Mansehra. Zahid Khan is 23 years old; he and his family are living below poverty line having least/minimum access to basic life needs; old age father is only the source of income earning only about 15,000 PKR/month; 600/day; Zahid’s father is a shop keeper in Barari village. Even he is unable to meet the basic food needs of his large family. In such circumstances Zahid and his family is living a miserable & hard-hitting life.
During case study it was keenly observed by SDF team that none of Zahid’s family member has vocation/technical skills nor has professional education; through which they may be able to earn a handsome income. Due to extreme poverty & his brother hand to mouth situation Zahid was able to carry his study up to class 12th. Mostly he spends his time in Afghan village with friends finding difficulty in job placement without any professional/technical skills in local market.
Contribution of SDF team:
With the financial support of UNHCR; SDF got ELST project for Afghan Refugees targeted population in Distrcit Mansehra & Haripur. Basic theme of ELST project is to provide technical/vocational skills to 160 young Afghan M/F in both targeted Districts. It was remarkable idea to implement such sort of skill development project for most deprived and marginalized Afghan Refugees living within Pakistan; basic theme of idea is to enhance their vocational skills so they be able to live their life in a dignified manner while their stay in Pakistan and after peaceful return to their origin they may contribute to economic growth of their society & country. SDF also did tremendous job by providing linkages development opportunities with key stake holders and took a bold step of job placement/internship program for male Afghan trainees in such critical situation.
SDF team during baseline survey met with Zahid Rehman and his family and got details about the miserable life of Zahid and his family. Zahid showed his extreme willing & interest to attain some sort of technical skills in computer trade so he may be able to support his father and family to meet the basic needs of life. SDF team with mutual consultation of UNHCR enumerator & community members selected Zahid for 06 months vocational training at GPI Mansehra.
Zahid taking keen interest in Market visit and discussion with UNHCR officials. Zahid Rehman after getting enrolled at GPI Mansehra in Computer trade took keen interest in his short training and showed regular attendance and motivation. SDF team facilitated & supported Zahid in adjustment as internee at “Fast net café & computers” in local market of Mansehra.
In afternoon Zahid is taking regular classes at GPI Mansehra and in morning goes to Shop for work. Zahid with his computer shop owner is now able to deal all types of accessories, printing, scanning, composing and also able to look after the shop and to deal customers.
While having interview with Zahid on 26th of March 2015 by Mr. Mubashir (PC) SDF; Zahid is jubilant that one side he is attaining professional short training course in Government Institution and on other side he has started to work in market as internee. Zahid told that he is feeling difference between his previous life and living standard but after attaining vocational training and job placement he is satisfied and happy to support his elder brother and family. Zahid is earning about 8000 to 10000 PKR/Month and efficiently contributing in economic stability of his family & society. Zahid is also able to teach and guide other guys come on computer/net cafe.
Job placement currently working at “Fast net café & computers” in Punjab chowk Mansehra. Zahid told that before the intervention of SDF he was not satisfied with living standard and thought to be a liability; spent most of time with friends and some time went to market with his father to help him in his daily labor work. But now he and his family are observing the change in his and his family social & economic status. Zahid and his father while interview warmly paid thanks to SDF & UNHCR by providing Zahid a plat form to enhance his vocational skills for sustainable productive results in future.
Zahid also requested SDF team & UNHCR to launch such type of projects for young generation especially for Refugees so they will be engaged in some productive activities which will lead to path way towards socio economic growth. Zahid also told SDF team that he saves some money from stipend amount every month so he will be able to establish his own small business in future. He considered himself as role model for other young generation. Zahid showed his willing to return to Afghanistan and to establish his own small RAC business there. He also requested to provide some sort of micro financing to establish small business.
